Assistant Pastor Job Description Martins Creek Mennonite Church
Position Details This position is full-time with benefits, including retirement and health insurance. This position is given the title Assistant Pastor and its responsibilities are to assist in three primary areas:
Preaching and Teaching
Congregational Care
Administration
Position Advancement It is the vision of the church to see this position advance from the position of assistant pastor to head pastor within 3 stages: Assistant Pastor, Co-Pastor, then Head Pastor. This will allow the pastor to get acclimated to the congregation, building a strong foundation relationally before carrying the mantle of leadership associated with the position of head pastor.
Expectations Preaching and Teaching: At first, the pastor will be expected to preach once a month. When the transition to co-pastor is established, the pastor will preach twice a month. When the final transition takes place as head pastor, the pastor will be expected to preach at least 3 times a month. In addition to this, the pastor may be asked to teach during Sunday School, Family Night or seasonal Bible Studies.
Congregational Care: The pastor will be expected to assist in the pastoral care of individuals hospitalized, homebound or going through a crisis. The pastor will also assist in funerals, weddings and special congregational events that foster pastoral care. Finally, the pastor is expected to meet occasionally with congregational members to develop a relationship that fosters spiritual growth. These aspects of congregational care will increase as the pastor shifts into the co-pastor and head pastor position.
Administration: The pastor will assist in administrative responsibilities that include church vision, the overseeing of church ministries and the ongoing connections with the community and broader church. Specifically, the pastor is expected to develop and oversee ministries that focus on young adults and young families. Over time, the administrative responsibilities will include the weekly leadership duties associated with running the church as a head pastor.
Qualifications The pastor should theologically align with the 1995 Confession of Faith in a Mennonite Perspective. The pastor should have a passion for teaching, while possessing gifts in shepherding and administration. The pastor should have a calling that centers around being a lead pastor. Pastoral experience and education are preferred.
